About this test
A portion of the 40 questions on your written knowledge test for your learner’s permit in Minnesota will be on traffic fines, license requirements, and driving under the influence laws. This DVS practice test contains questions just on those topics, pulled directly from the 2024 Minnesota Driver’s Manual. The official knowledge test for your permit will have 40 multiple-choice questions, of which you’ll need to correctly answer at least 32 to pass and receive your permit. At the DVS office, you’ll also need to take a vision test and provide proof of identity and residence. If you’re a minor, you also have additional requirements before you may get your permit. You will need to show completion of a driver’s education class and that you’ve signed up for behind-the-wheel training to start once you have your permit. Minors will also be required to have a parental signature on their permit application. Once you’ve received your permit, it will be valid for up to two years. Minors must hold their permit for a minimum of six months before they can take the driving test for their provisional license, while those over 18 must hold their permit for three months.
